FAQ

What does Upto do?

Upto keeps every app on your Mac up to date. It shows all your apps and command-line tools in one list, wherever they came from, checks for updates on a schedule, and installs them in one click, verified and in place. See the Upto page for details.

Which apps does Upto see?

Apps in the Applications folder, the Applications folder in your home folder, and any folder you add. Upto files each app under where it came from: the App Store, TestFlight, Setapp, Homebrew, Direct for apps with their own updater, or Manual for apps you update by hand. Setapp apps keep updating through Setapp.

Which command-line tools does Upto update?

Homebrew formulae and command-line casks, global npm packages, and tools like Claude Code and Codex that come with their own installer, each updated the way it was installed. To include Python tools from pipx or uv, turn on Include Python tools in Settings.

What about apps I downloaded from a website?

Upto finds an update source for most of them and keeps using it. When it isn’t sure about a source it finds, it asks you to review it first. You can also give any of them a source with Suggest Update Source…

Does Upto replace the App Store?

No. Upto shows App Store and TestFlight apps in the same list. If the mas command-line tool is installed, Upto installs App Store updates when you click Update. Otherwise, and for TestFlight apps, it opens the App Store.

What does Upto require?

Upto requires macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later. You need Homebrew only for apps and command-line tools you installed with it.

What is Upto Index?

Upto Index finds updates that no source announces, from versions shared anonymously by people who use Upto. A version installed on one of your Macs shows up on your other Macs on the same license at their next check.

How will I know when updates are available?

Upto checks as often as you choose, from every hour to every month, and shows the number of waiting updates on its Dock icon and in the menu bar. It can also notify you about new updates, finished installs, and updates that need your attention.

How does Upto install an update?

Homebrew apps update through Homebrew. For other apps it can install, Upto replaces the app in place, quitting and reopening it if it’s running. Installer packages and apps you can’t change need administrator approval.

How does Upto know a download is safe?

Upto verifies every update it installs against the developer’s signature. Homebrew verifies the apps it updates against their published checksum, when there is one. Upto never installs an update that fails a check, doesn’t run on your Mac, or isn’t newer than what you have, and asks you to review updates rated Low Confidence.

What does Update All install?

Every update in the list that Upto can install itself. Updates offered only as a download page, updates rated Low Confidence, and updates for copies someone other than the developer signed are left for you to install one at a time. Upto asks before including a major version, which may need a new license.

Can Upto install beta versions?

Yes. Upto offers betas for apps you already run a beta of or set to receive betas in their own settings, and for other apps if you turn on Include beta versions in Settings. An app with a beta channel can follow it or stay on releases.

Can I skip an update or ignore an app?

Yes. Control-click an app or tool, then choose Skip This Version to hide its update until a newer one arrives, or Ignore Updates to hide its updates for a day, a week, a month, or indefinitely. Undo either on the Ignored page.

Can I read release notes in my language?

Yes. Upto shows release notes in the language you choose and translates notes written in another, with the original a click away. It also looks for notes that an update leaves out.

What leaves my Mac?

Upto checks versions, reads release notes, and downloads updates from update sources and developer websites. It checks some downloads’ notarization with Apple. Translation happens on your Mac. With an active license and Use Index on, Upto shares app versions with Upto Index and looks up newer ones. Discover’s catalog and the icons of command-line tools load from the web, and Upto reports when Discover shows a sponsored app. License and trial checks and Upto’s own updates go to parcse.com.

What does Upto share with Upto Index?

The identifier, developer, and version of apps signed by their developer, the names of command-line tools from public catalogs, and which apps Upto can’t check for updates or find release notes for, so Upto Index can add sources for them. Nothing that identifies your Mac is sent. Your other Macs on the same license also learn where to download each update. Upto never shares apps you exclude or ignore indefinitely. Settings shows what it has shared, and turning off Use Index stops sharing and looking up versions.

Does Upto track how I use it?

No. Upto has no analytics and shares nothing about you with sponsors. When Discover shows a sponsored app, Upto reports that it was shown, at most once a day, and opening one counts as a click.

Can I try Upto before I buy?

Yes. The first time you open Upto with an internet connection, it starts a free trial. The trial includes every feature except Upto Index, which requires a license. Free trial availability can change at any time. When Upto is sold without a trial, Parcse Shop purchases are refundable in full within 14 days instead.

What’s the difference between Yearly and Pay once?

Yearly is a subscription for up to five Macs and includes every update and Upto Index while you’re subscribed. Pay once covers up to three Macs, is sold for a limited time during the launch, and includes every update until the next major version, along with Upto Index and a discount on that version.

Why is there a yearly plan?

Finding updates is ongoing work: sources change, download pages move, and Upto Index runs on servers. Subscribe during the launch offer, and your price stays the same for as long as you stay subscribed.

What happens if I cancel?

You keep the version you have, with every feature on your Mac, and it keeps checking your apps for updates. Updates to Upto itself and Upto Index return when you subscribe again.

Is Upto included in Parcse Supporter?

Yes. Parcse Supporter covers Upto on up to three Macs and includes every update and Upto Index while you’re a member. When your membership ends, you keep the version you have.
